I was completely in the grips of this book . . . til the final chapter, hating the young soldier Emmet, but having deep sympathy for Emmet in his twilight time. His whole life was ruined because of his early behaviour. It encouraged me to research a little into the Armenian genocide situation of the first world war as I was hazy. I had to take breaks as it was overwhelming at times, though the authors ruse of slipping back and forth between the old/new protagonist was effective. The last chapter or so was too contrived for my liking. All said, worth a read.
