it was amazing
bookshelves: just-plain-good

I'm falling in love with Kristin Hannah as an author. After becoming acquainted with her through her fabulous book The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah The Nightingale, my daughter, who is also a fan, gave me The Great Alone for Christmas. This book kept me spellbound. Like a toxic relationship, I was at once drawn to the setting of Alaska and repelled by it and the same goes for Leni's parents. Some of the time, I hated them and at other times, I felt sympathy, but at no time did I feel bored by this book.

In high school English class, I remember my teacher often talked about setting as being almost a character or metaphor, and this book illustrates that perfectly. Hannah takes us into the wilds of Alaska in the 1970s, and I do mean wild, where a tale of madness and survival and ultimately true love is set against the backdrop of an unforgiving, yet beautiful wilderness.

Be sure to read this.
