A cast of quirky characters, including spike-haired Josh whose parents are in prison for selling home-grown marijuana, the Applewhite family who all have a claim-to-fame except E.D., a budding photo-journalist, and a guru, all have some interesting problems to solve. Josh must decide if living with this family without a television and internet games would be better than juvenile hall. E.D. has Josh's home-education experiment foisted upon her, although she is his age. Throw in some serious community theatre challenges and interesting diet options and you're in for some fun.

Humorous young adult novels are few and this one appeals to guys and girls. The problems are real although the characters seem larger than life. But all is realistically and refreshingly dealt with. The characters get some personal insights, as does the reader. In addition, the author handles all this without any "language" or "hormones".
