I'm a huge Russell Banks fan, but his stab here at a novel reminiscent of bygone times (depression era Fitzgerald & Hemingway) is mostly cringe-worthy.

I give it 2 stars for at least being engaging enough to make me finish the book, although the characters aren't the kind anyone cares much about and the storyline, while often interesting, doesn't delves as much as devolve into the characters' relationships, with several passages making me wonder if I'd picked up a mass-market romance at the supermarket. A seemingly interesting subplot with historical significance kind of fizzles out over the course of the novel.

Read anything else by Banks before giving this one a try.
