really liked it
bookshelves: fiction, novella, american, mythology, beowulf, monsters

Having read Beowulf a few years ago, I was keen to read Grendel, the story retold from the monster's point of view - though, in fact, Beowulf appears very late in this story.[return][return]All the same, it's a prodigious piece of writing. Modernism as a literary movement has not aged well, but at its best modernist literature has the kind of confidence and exuberance John Gardner shows as he takes the monstrous Grendel, a mixture of brute and philosopher, for a spin. (4.5/5)
