First, I really like these people. They are good, honest, flawed, impassioned by injustice, and they like dogs. While it helps to have read the prior novels, it is not critical (although I recommend them because they are by and large so good of this genre). The book is like a good row, or paddle. The water flows below you, carrying and directing your thoughts. I figured out one of the culprits early on, but not why or how until it was revealed in the book. Every stroke propels you forward and there is a place for every character. My only down thought on this is that the river is not as much of a character as it could be. A personal bias. Ms. Crombie has not lost her impact after 13 books. Well done.
