it was amazing
bookshelves: historicals

I began this year reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and unless the frenzy of the holidays abates, The Nightingale will most likely be the last book I read in 2019. What a way to bookend my reading year! Although The Nightingale was fiction, it was nonetheless as impactful as Beneath a Scarlet Sky because what was depicted in the book could have easily happened. I recently read of the death of a 96-year-old Belgian resistance fighter, and her story was similar to Isabelle's in the book.

The story is tense, captivating, and heart-wrenching, but what I most appreciated was how Kristin Hannah wove into the story observations about life, love, and human nature. Also, this year I read Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, and this story illustrated the psychological principles he wrote about.

I have never read a book by Ms. Hannah before, but I guarantee it won't be the last. I'll never forget The Nightingale.
