it was amazing
bookshelves: nonfiction

A lesser known subject of California history is Allensworth, the state's only all Black town, set in the southwest corner of Tulare County and flourishing between 1908 and 1918. Water shortage and a bypass of the railroad led to its decline. In the mid 20th century, Allensworth disappeared from the map, but happily, in the 1970s, it became a California State Historic Park. Author Alice Royal was born in Allensworth, and her volume contains many lively interviews of other residents. As true of all Heyday Books, this volume is beautifully designed with many photographs and illustrations. I highly recommend this book and, even more, a visit to this amazing historic site.
