The actual science writing is almost all pretty good.

Skip the extraordinarily political, and not even very well written or persuasive, introduction by the new series editor (how did they find someone even more annoying than the old one?). It nearly soured me on the book, and series, entirely. But you know, the science articles were actually really good, in most cases.

HBalikov Which did you like most?

Rossdavidh The one about the emerging science on the medical effects of being a black woman in America was interesting. It was long assumed that these were primarily due to lower income, less education, etc. However, as we have more upper-income, college-educated black women in America now (e.g. Serena Williams' experience with our medical system is mentioned), it has become apparent that there are some effects which are not explained by either income or education levels (or alcohol or tobacco use or any of the other known correlates of those). So, there is an increasing examination of what is going on with that. One thing that helps with this, is that there are now more black women doctors and medical researchers to push the topic.
