Billingham has created a slightly disfunctional but very endearing policeman in Thorne. The author's an automatic buy for me and I really enjoyed the story. It's a simple plot in many ways - Thorne has to solve a crime under a tight timescale and if he fails, the consequences could be fatal.I agree with one of the other reviewers that the TV show was disappointing in many ways. Hendricks was just plain wrong - but luckily I'd forgotten that as I read this one and Thorne and Hendricks were back to being what I imagine them to be. I didn't want to put the book down until I'd finished it.
