Phew! This was a long read, but then what do you expect for a book that attempts to give a history of Hinduism and begins with 50,000 BC. It is certainly a very interesting journey through the tales and myths of Hinduism, and the various forms it took in the journey from the ancient Vedic religion to the various living forms today. Apart from an obsession with horses, Doniger manages to avoid getting sidetracked too far and remaining quite neutral to the various tellings and interpretations throughout.

Shubhendu Trivedi Interesting that you give it 4 stars, would have loved to hear in person why. I could not stand her vulgarity and complete lack of understanding about matters (even if it is an 'alternate history'). I sat in two classes by her to make sure I have a good view. To me, she is one who represents everything that is wrong with the humanities in America.
