The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is about a guy named Ponyboy, who is part of a gang. The gang is constantly fighting with the opposing gang, the Socs. In one instance, one of the gang members, Jonny, ends up stabbing and accidently killing a member of the Socs. This sends them on the run, and they end up hiding out in an old church. The church ends up catching on fire, trapping some children inside. Ponyboy and Jonny save the children, and get hurt when the roof caves in. After all of that drama, the Socs want to have a fight. A lot of the greasers don’t want to fight, but it’s inevitable.
I really liked this book. It’s a good story of rivalry, differences, and stereotypes. As far as the writing goes, it wasn’t incredibly intricate, but the plot was great. I thought it was kind of a cop out for the characters to lose consciousness after things needed explanation, but that was just how the writer handled it. There are some perilous situations, but it’s definitely appropriate for most audiences.
