really liked it

This was suspenseful, such that I read it at night and not just on my commute -- a stellar recommendation! Solidly a "woman's book", the author must -- this just occurs to me as I write -- be exeptionally adept as the characters, the events, and the setting are all unsympathetic, bleak, non-admirable, distressing and/or distasteful. And yet I was in a rush to finish. So, faint praise as this may seem, I give it a 3.5

The "salt" topic should come as no spoiler (see: cover and title), so I feel free to say that the scenes of people eating, tasting, and sipping salt are repugnant. Sure, I like salt -- on scrambled eggs, tomatoes, corn on the cob -- but to just take a teaspoon full and eat it? No.

Also, a warning for readers with a soft heart for animals.
