it was ok

** spoiler alert ** 2.5 - 3 stars for sheer insane-ness of this! I liked this title, but I also didn't like it. If you like nonlinear, almost nonexistent plots, this book is for you. :) *get out the Tylenol, my friends. I felt like this was more of an experience than a story. Morgenstern heavily drew on Alice and Wonderland for this title, twisting into a mysterious adult story. I found if I could just read for the descriptively beautiful writing, I was fine. When I started to try to "figure" anything out or "understand" then I got irritated. For much of the book, time is fluid and you find yourself jumping from past, present, and future in a moment. This was disconcerting if I didn't constantly remind myself that time was subjective. The only thing I will say is that deep, underlying the nonsensical nature of this, I did like the sentiments and thoughts on story and how it effects our lives and I can see that there is a brilliance in how the author kept things *just a few, mind you* straight.

All the supposed romantic story lines fell flat for me and just frustrated me. They didn't add to the story and felt like they were forced and added because you are "suppose" to have them. I never REALLY felt close to any of the characters until the end, and I cared only for ONE side character and I feel like there really wasn't a clear sense of at least a little happiness in the ending. The details and places and descriptions are mind boggling...all over the place! The imagery, repeated symbols, and bits and pieces floating, *yes, floating, is the right word* through this is astounding. I loved the Kitchen the most...and you don't find out until the end what that really is...ugh. Overall, I was entertained and if you can suspend belief and just go along for the ride, you may like this.
