The most fascinating part of this book was the historical context. I never realized that there mingling between the Dutch, English and Native Americans in the early days of New Amsterdam - n/k/a New York City. The Dutch believe in equal opportunity, allowing women and former slaves an enormous amount of freedoms given the times. And for a territory that was so close to those of the religious fanatics that founded New England, the Dutch had a surprisingly high religious tolerance. However, I'm not a squeamish person, but the subject matter really bothered me.
