The best way to summarize my reaction to this book is ‘meh’. The author delivers on what the title promises but the book feels incredibly episodic and without a cohesive framework. The author states in the introduction that he wants to avoid the reader “seeing the forest but missing the trees” and while I share his intention this went the other way. Although he keeps the selection chronological the book does not give any more history than what the author sketched in the introduction. In all honesty I cannot recommend this book to anyone save to those interested in the etymology of random words.
