I loved this book. It tells the story of the Jewish people from prehistoric times until 1964. Of course the cavemen weren’t Jewish but Michener begins with them to chronicle the development of religion. Thus readers are treated to the history of Baal and Astarte as well as the story of Yaweh’s chosen people. Michener takes dry historical fact and turns it into a colorful and compelling collection of stories. He uses the artifacts discovered at various levels on an archealogical dig to tell a tale of each important era of Jewish history. Don’t let the page count scare you. This is more a collection of short stories than a monster-sized novel.
