The title of this book does this book a disservice. While Sex for Sale exposes the prostitution, pornogrpahy, and sex industry; it does so through unconventional angles. A few of the essays tackle the mainstream aspects of these topics, but most have a female centered/feminist, gay/lesbian, or racial bend to them. This causes the reader to consider the complexities of prostitution, pornography, and the sex industry. All essays are empathetic and the sex worker has a voice in the book, which helps to break the presumed "victim" role that most people assign sex workers. Articles such as Jill A. Bakehorn's "Women Made Pornography" really turn conventions upside down. And the multiple comparative studies among male/female, gay/straight, gay/lesbian, black/white escorts, prostitutes, and strip clubs help those on the outside of the sex industry understand it better.
