Deepak Chopra ruins Rumi. //

oversentimental, unambiguous, new agey //

subtle notmetooism //

0.5: 0.5, 1.o, 0.5, 0.1, 2.0 //

These are the kinds of poems that make me want to cross out lines, renumber stanzas, and write my own endings. Actually I did just that. And the introduction to the book nearly made me gag. "During that week of spiritual rhapsody," writes Chopra in regard to his fellow translator, "We spent many moments exulting in the ravishing ecstasy that the passion of Rumi evoked in both of us." So they got it on?

I had to return to this review to mention that I followed this book up with some other translations of Rumi, and wow, my summary sentence is apt. the other translations tower over these third-grader arrangements. //
