Full disclosure; I have a dog.

As entertainment, this book did not work for me. I’m not a fan of full on weepers. I’m more of an adventure-weeper, thriller-weeper or historical fiction-weeper kind of guy, where emotion adds range to a good story. ‘The Art of Racing In The Rain’ is simply too much of an emotional manipulation for me to enjoy.

On the other hand, I’ve read the thing three times and will keep it on my bookshelf as a textbook example of clean writing and, of course, emotional manipulation. This book is truly brilliant at both. As a writer, whenever I need a device to inspire readers to reach for the Kleenex, I’ll grab ‘Racing, close my eyes and thumb it open. No doubt I’ll find an inspiring weepy structural model to study.

I can’t pin stars to this one. It’s five for writing and structure, one for story and fortune cookie philosophy.
