Although I enjoy Elizabeth George books, this one wasn't really as fun to read for me. The mystery was, of course, very good, but I was less impressed with the setting of the book. Showing the characters at a time before the previous books did serve to give a bit more background and therefore understanding of them, but I must admit it annoyed me so much to be plunked down into it with no warning (mainly because of the romantic relationships with certain characters, I confess) that I set the book down for months before returning to it. Havers makes a brief and surly appearance that seemed completely unnecessary, almost as though she was there to make up for not being there. The mystery itself, though, was still very good.
