Persuasion

This was the first time in some years that I've re-read this Austen novel, one of the quieter and shorter ones, but one which has ranked among my favorites. It was striking me, on this pass, that it rather shows the effects of having been rapidly written (it was her last finished novel before her death.) Many of the scenes which, in Emma or Pride and Prejudice would be fleshed out into full dialogue and description are here gestured at with a montage-like technique. It is perhaps not a surprise that this was made into one of the most successful (indeed, probably the most successful) Austen adaptation to film in the 1995 movie staring Amanda Root.
