bookshelves: giveaways-won, first-reads
Recommended for: Anyone that likes Southern family history.

I won this through the Goodread giveaway and couldn't be more pleased with a "free" book. Brian Holers has crafted a story that puts the reader in the middle of a Louisiana family of men that carries a tragic history into today's world. Leonard, one of 3 brothers, that grew up in family where their Dad raised them on toughness and violence and left out the love part. As Leonard lies on his death bed he asks brother Vernon to find his two grown sons, Jody and Scooter, and have them come visit him one last time. The recollections of Jody and Scooter growing up is interspersed with the tales of Vernon, Leonard and their deceased bother, Pearl's adolescence. The mix is a wonderful telling of a family searching for acceptance and understanding of their place in today's world.
