really liked it

What a page turner! The century and a half that has passed since its initial publication has not dulled the tension one whit.

At first I thought it was going to be a sleepy tale. The main character, Robert Audley, is a laid back fellow, so laid back that some might say he lacks ambition or is apathetic. And he might have continued in that vein the rest of his life, happily smoking pipes and collecting mongrel dogs if his good friend George had not gone missing.

A fantastic villain, good tension and conflicting interests in the discovery and revealing of the crimes, and a nice tied-up-in-bows ending where the good end happily and the bad unhappily. Very satisfying novel, spot-on for genre expectations while still managing to surprise even a jaded reader like me.
