bookshelves: books-friends-persuaded-me-to-avoid

Listing this brought in a couple quick, acerbic recommendations that I not pursue this novel. And I figure, what are goodread friends for, if not to steer you away from the shoals as well as toward the oasis?

Emily You'll have to let me know. Rebecca is one of the few "classics" my husband adores.

Kelly I didn't think so. I found it incredibly dull, flat, and unengaging. The main character proses on and on to no purpose, with unremarkable thoughts and descriptions. I went into it with great enthusiasm and gave up, after three attempts, within the first 100 pages.

Mark Whew, that's intimidating, especially after having just finished a lackluster book (see my review of "Under the Glacier"). I'll at least plunge in and see ...

Kelly Of course, of course. I'm always an advocate of seeing for yourself. You could find some hidden gems I was unaware of. I just thought that it was supposed to be an alluring, mysterious, eerie sort of book by everything I had heard, and instead, I got plodding and muddled and prose unrecognizable as coming from the same woman who wrote Rebecca. Maybe I didn't have enough patience? I'll be interested to see what you think.
