Three Words That Describe This Book: claustrophobic, compelling, flawed characters

What a wonderful space horror debut novel.

Space horror is a subset of sci-fi horror but it is very specific because the taking place in space, off earth, is part of the frame and the enjoyment. It also includes awesome monsters because in space there could be anything!

In this case we have an extremely claustrophobic story taking place completely in a series of tunnels where our narrator is on a dangerous mission to do....well that's also part off the horror [besides the actual monsters that lives in the tunnels]...she doesn't;t know why she is there. The only person she is in contact with is the person on the other end of the communication device she has. A woman who is up above somewhere and, who it turns out, is in charge of the mission.

Both women are very flawed and honest about it. The action is so closed in. Tunnels, living inside suits that are hooked into your body's functions and organs, at times in the dark or in flooded areas, encountering the bodies of those who failed before... It just goes from bad to worse.

It is unease on top of claustrophobia on top of fear, on top of terror on top of panic-- for the entire story.

But it is also a story about the two main characters, who they are, what their motivations are and the fragile connection they make despite it all.

Readalikes: Space horror is a thing. My favorite of recent years is THE HEMATOPHAGES and its prequel novella SKINWRAPPERS you can access a review of both here:

That link also has a link to a Book Riot List of Space Horror with great options including PARASITE by Darcy Coates and author I will be highlighting in Library Journal very soon and one of the hottest titles of 2019, GIDEON THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir
