really liked it

This is one of the books of the 20th century for me. I think it is available in English too so read it! Especially if you are a parent of young teens.

Every city has its seedy side and West Berlin more than most - it was always a little weird because of its odd isolated status as a kind of democratic & capitalist advertisement so close to its Communist neighbour. There had also been a long tradition of experimentation and excess in the city even before the war that was accentuated by the post war division.

It's also one of my favourite cities and my visits have always been memorable. I do recall being stuck on the Bahnhof Zoo very late at night in the 1970's and being absolutely terrified of going down from the platform to the toilets. This book captures the horrors of that time from the other side in a way and brings a human face to the misery those children suffered.
