I've been on a Geraldine Brooks kick (Caleb's Crossing and People of the Book), but I found March disappointing. March is a weak man and the horrors--and temptations--he is exposed to in the passage of time leave him a changed man. Far more effective is the emphasis on his marriage to Marmee and their relationship, which shows that even when transgressions occur, forgiveness is possible if love holds sway. I also enjoyed the depictions of Henry Thoreau and his family and the Emersons, who lived nearby and were in contact with the Marches. Overall, though, I don't think this book was as successful as the others.
