Barbara Since reading this, I have done other reading on the history of the English language but I don't think any were as interesting. I love Bill Bryson's style as he writes about English and style. I have always taken his words about how even English usage manuals have mistakes with English usage to heart. I think we should use language freely without being paranoid that someone will mock us for being stupid and using English wrong. English is a beautiful language and I'm grateful for the lack of "language police" when French was the language of the elite in England that may have made some of the changes to our tongue that make English more friendly.
