really liked it

I had not read anything by Jojo Moyes before I picked up Me Before You on the strength of a blogger's recommendation. It's a story about a directionless young woman from the wrong side of the tracks who stumbles into a job as carer for a quadriplegic man who was a career hotshot and extreme sports nut before the freak accident that took away his mobility. The story could have been written as a four- tissue romance with a contrived happy ending. But Moyes is far better than that. Me Before You is compelling reading, both funny and desperately sad. Moyes pulls no punches about the devastating impact of such an injury not only on the victim but on everyone who cares about him, and she follows the emotional journeys of all her characters with compassion and unflinching honesty. I really cared about these people. A wonderful read - four and a half stars from me.
