did not like it

a woman gets roped into cleaning out her dead grandmother's hoarder house and 1. finds a promisingly creepy diary, 2. starts getting chased around by a mutilated deer carcass; also promising, and 3. ends up being taken into a weird but mundane fantasy land filled with more of the deer carcass type monsters, where ultimately nothing at all happens to her. listen. this book has been all over horror-book instagram lately and the premise is good and truly the first time the protagonist encounters a monster i was like "YIKES! AWFUL! DELICIOUS!" but this was a BAD book. the thing starts with the protag writing about her experience after the whole thing has happened, so we know straight away that she survives so there's no real threat through the rest of the book, which... why?! also the book takes place in north carolina and is written by a north carolinian yet for some reason there are little britishisms peppered in throughout the book (literally "she knew bloody well" is used) and that shit 100% ripped me right outta the story every time. the narration was awkward and there was so much joking around (both in the dialogue and in the narrator's head) that it was hard to stay in the mindset of a horror story. there's a bizarre manuscript that the protag finds that we for some reason are made to read the entirety of that drags on for ages and makes little sense and does nothing to further the story and actually got my hopes up about there possibly being a more enthralling climax than there actually was.. idk this whole thing was crap and just a great reminder that just because a shitload of people on instagram like something, that doesn't mean it's good. 1/5.
