Excellent picture book biography of a cultural legend. Winter's text as a jazzy beat, and it's something you definitely want to practice before reading in front of a crowd. Marjorie Priceman's illustrations are wild and funky and full of life. The text only takes us from Josephine's childhood through the 1920's, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. It presents to us a singular woman and her quest to find freedom worth dancing for.
