it was amazing
bookshelves: 2019, genre-historical-fiction, level-adult, 2020classics

This was my first Willa Cather novel, but it will definitely not be my last! I was amazed at how much empathy a non-Catholic author has for adherents to the faith, and I was equally impressed by all the hardships priests had to endure in evangelizing the United States in the early days of Westward Expansion. It made me appreciate my weekend Mass options much more fully! The writing in this book is not difficult to read, but images from the story have stuck with me for weeks after finishing the book. I also really really enjoyed our book club discussion of the book, and I hope we'll read more by Cather!
