it was amazing

Wow! This book works on so many levels. It is rare to find a book that truly would lend itself to a deep study the way this one would. Jane Eyre, Audubon, Joe Pepitone, and several classic children's books are all referenced here.

The plot goes from really sad and dreary to almost unbelievably sunshiny, but that's just part of the fun.

The characters are mostly compelling, ranging from a father who is a total villain to a sadistic P.E. teacher who becomes sympathetic once you realize what's bothering him. The female characters are a bit less original--sassy girl from town, prissy librarian, repressed mother. Oh, but Mrs. Windermere, the playwright in opera clothes listening to the muse sitting on her desk, she was good.

I almost gave this one a miss because of the sappy title and cover, which in no way do this book justice. Why wasn't it called Joe Pepitone and the Great Blue Heron or something? Or maybe just "216."
