I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. Zahn is legendary in the Star Wars EU and this book is no different. He can craft an incredibly technical universe like no other. The interweaving of the story lines are seamless and intriguing as usual.

What bothered me about the book was the lack of character development. There is plenty of room between Episodes IV and V to build upon the characters that just isn't taken advantage of. Granted, Zahn may be handcuffed by Lucas himself. And there are some good moments of personal insight, especially with Han. But Mara Jade is still a stoic killing machine and Luke is nothing but an insecure kid.

However, I'm getting greedy. This is a great book and fills in a previously unknown chapter in the Star Wars timeline.
