liked it

I have read a couple of books by Lee Smith and think she is a great writer. This book is rated three stars because the last part of the book did not do justice to the first part of the book.

I loved the way she captured the language and the peculiar superstitions of the mountain people. My husband's family is from southern Missouri via Virginia and Tennessee many generations past and I remember hearing many of the same ways of speaking in the voices of his now deceased grand-parents and great-aunts.

The introduction of Jennifer was off-putting. She may have been born there, but it was never her home.
