Ally Shand Sounds brilliant. I've been looking for a good book on Rome. Would you recommend this one?

Alasdair Peterson Excellent book, must have read it three or four times now. Holland is a master of narrative history and his novel-like approach to history is both gripping and memorable. He's particularly skilled at capturing the contemporary atmosphere and not just recounting dry facts. He's also got a companion volume on the Greco-Persian wars (Persion Fire) and one on the rise of Islam as well; I've not read the latter but the Persian one is also excellent.
