really liked it

What a rich story -- I can't stop thinking about Bea Nightingale, the main character. Everyone else in the book treats her with contempt while at the same time they revolve around her, and look to her for help and even with admiration for how to live a life. The writing was beautiful, classic Ozick, and the story was deeply moving and layered. This is the second of Ozick's books I've read and I really enjoy her style. It's complex and multidimensional, and very beautiful.

Cynthia Ozick
“The ground was scorched, the streets teemed with refugees, and these Americans were playing at fleeing! As if they had something to resent, to despise, to scorn, to run away from! As if they weren't the lords of the earth.”
