So. Of my personal rules for fantasy fiction, dictating what makes a fantasy novel shit, Mistborn breaks several.

It has a map. It has two, actually.
Stupid names.
An explained magic system.

Oh boy, does it have an explained magic system. I thought Sanderson spent pages and pages auditioning for Wizards of the Coast to buy the license to make a collectible card game, and then I finished the novel and lo! A fucking appendix to define the magic system. WIth a table! Sanderson is somewhat notorious for being very very impressed with himself and his inventiveness and apparently particularly with his ability to tell you all about it in the middle of a story.

So it's a real shame then that the novel is so very good. It's a shame that he marred what was a perfectly good story and a perfectly good essay on violent political conflict and it's merits and pitfalls, with the fantasy genre's equivalent of hopping up on the table and furiously masturbating.

Dee The thing I find irritating about Sanderson is definitely the way he describes his magic-using fight scenes in such technical detail that you could reconstruct them at home. When KJ Parker does detail-you-can-reconstruct-at-home, you know it's because he actually HAS constructued it at home. With Sanderson, yeah, it's just geek masturbation.

David *clears throat* Maybe not a CCG, but...

How convenient that the magic system is already codified and ready for algorithimisation.
