The Mirage creates a terrifically compelling premise and expounds on that premise with admirable imagination. But that same imagination creates some minor problems in plot structure, and major problems for theme. Either Matt Ruff unwittingly conveys the opposite message as what he intended, or he is a very firm believer in American exceptionalism and isn't above expressing it in a rather roundabout way.

Ultimately, the alternate universe created by the novel is Ruff's own, and it is sufficiently coherent as to frame a worthwhile story, but it also strains credulity enough to be occasionally distracting. Similarly, the story itself is strong overall, but veers in directions that some readers might find unsatisfying.
