I selected this to read to fill in the adventure square on my summer reading challenge bingo card. It is the last book for the challenge.

Have heard much praise for this series over the years. I like King, but am put off at times by his lengthy prose that does not advance stories. This book did nothing to disabuse me of that.

I did not care for this story.

There seems to have been no need to drag the boy across the desert. That, the main thrust of this volume, was pointless to this book. Perhaps it comes back in other volumes, but the book needs to hold its own.

The flashbacks were oddly placed.

This book reeks of a young writer. Roland takes mescaline and has his epiohany. I wrote a story in college about eating a mushroom pizza that rewarded the reader with a creation tale. It doesn't seem much different.

The dialogue between Roland and the man in black was quite contrived.

Nothing about this compels me to want to read the second volume.

To each his own. If you love the series, have at it. Me? I'll look for something else.
