This book is a surprise. I selected it because of several positive reviews and a verbal recommendation. It has exceeded my expectations. Steinhauer's style is effective, and his pacing is nicely balanced between detail and events. It is a modern espionage novel that does not need to get mired down by the terrorist of the week. It speaks to beliefs, the truth, and human values without becoming preachy. It features conspiracy elements that echo Ludlum, procedure and process like Silva, and the ambiguity of Ambler or Le Carre. I will be reading more Steinhauer.
