I decided to read this in order to resolve, or try to resolve, the gnawing question that progressives struggle with, which is why the working class in America consistently votes against its financial interests. "Deer Hunting with Jesus" did not let me down in this regard. There were points of view in this book I agreed with, and points of view I didn't, but on the whole it gave me what sounded like realistic explanations for this phenomenon (of why a majority of poor and working class people vote against their financial interests), and depressingly convinced me that nothing will change any time soon. Here we are, having passed an affordable health care bill that could be such a boon to so many people -- and only thirty percent of the population support it, because to take help from the government is considered weak. So be it. At least this book gave me a much needed dose of reality.
