I didn't find this book as vicious as the summary made it out to be. I think it's the early 20th century British writing style more than anything. No matter how vicious a sentence is, you imagine the person saying it has a tea saucer in one hand and a biscuit in the other and it just takes the edge off.

I generally avoid war books and war films; I think my ambivalence about these things explains my lukewarm rating.

Graves was at his best when bashing the flag-wavers back home.
