First, this book was actually an amazing standalone read (I don't know if there will be a sequel, but it doesn't matter). It's been a long time since I have felt so satisfied when I finished a book. Jordan's dystopia is entirely (appallingly) believable and the premise is unique. The allusions to The Scarlet Letter are entertaining, but it is by no means necessary to have read it to enjoy this book. She confronts social issues unflinchingly without becoming pedantic. The characters are complex and the plot moves along at a suspenseful pace. Above all, this book really made me think!
