really liked it

‘All the Rage’ is the latest novel in the DI Adam Fawley series, set in Oxford, and in this one the crimes that he is investigating are horrible reminders of a past case that continues to haunt him, for very good reasons.
One of the strengths of the tale is that the identity of the perpetrator of vicious attacks on two teenage girls is not easy to deduce, thanks to Cara Hunter’s meticulous plotting and careful structuring. A big tick as far as I am concerned!
As the investigations advance, Hunter continues to develop the relationships, alliances and tensions within St Aldate’s police station very effectively. Whilst Adam Fawley is still at the centre of the plot, the reader becomes increasingly interested in the rest of the work force as their reactions to the crimes reveal much about their personalities.
Cara Hunter’s exploration of teenage friendship groups is mostly plausible, as is her portrayal of those on the margins. However, it’s difficult to gain a sense of the girls as individuals some of the time – perhaps that’s the point. When together, they are more likely to act as an unthinking group rather than as rational individuals. Mother/daughter relationships are also touched upon and it would have been useful for understanding some individuals’ motives if this area had been delved into further.
Quibbles aside, this is a read that it’s difficult to put down. Hunter is very skilled at developing the plot through a wide range of characters and there are enough cliff-hangers here for a year’s worth of soap opera! The ending is terrifying and enthralling in equal measures – she’s got me hooked for the next in the series now!
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK for a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair review.
