In this novel Anne Rice explores the concept of being given the gift of immunity against old age and illness in the form of a mutation between man and beast. It was not as engaging to me as her Vampire novels were, but still worth reading if you like visiting folklore that deals with the science of "what-if". What if there were beings who were immortal and became that way because of some extraordinary act of violence and the collusion of certain events. The venue is great and takes place in Northern California near where I live on the coast above San Francisco. You almost want to believe there could be these creatures living amongst us. If you're a fan of Anne Rice, you will enjoy this book.
