Though this book was not especially cheerful, I was drawn into the complicated relationship between the two families. I listened to the entire thing on audio, and at times, I did find myself dreading getting back to it because of how emotionally unsettling some of the subject matter was. Even so, the writing was top-notch, and I really felt I needed to know how things turned out for all the characters, so I stuck with it, and wound up feeling satisfied by the ending. I also thought the author did a beautiful job of portraying mental illness in a very real way and of subtly criticizing how poorly mental health issues have been handled by the medical system in the past.
