The Unadjusteds is an ambitious effort, and a really unusual story that stands out in the YA dystopian genre. The author creates a world where magic blends with reality, but not seamlessly. The fairytale dream becomes a steroid-fuelled nightmare. Quite literally. Questions about family, identity, and the need to belong are central in this story. All the things that are painfully relevant to a teenager take on a life-and-death significance. To be "different" can be a devastating experience for a young person, especially in a high school setting, and for the heroine the experience may be a life-shattering one. In a way, this book reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in terms of illuminating the horrors of adolescence through a sci fi/fantasy lens.
