After the Runaways took down the Pride in volume three, Vaughan is left with the task of fully integrating them in the Marvel universe. He goes all out with the cameos and continuity pulls, almost like he felt he had to prove himself. Look at these obscure heroes I know! How about that weird thing that happened to the Avengers years ago! Yet it works for the most part. A support group for former heroes is a genius idea, and their role in the story brings some nice humor and pathos. The main plot with Victor Mancha plays out well, too. I knew the reveal, but it’s a good mystery overall. While I think the Runaways work better on the fringes of the Marvel universe, I can’t deny that Vaughan creates compelling situations for them amongst familiar characters.

Either Alphona’s art is improving or it’s growing on me.
